Residential safety tips as the weather warms up

Please be advised that the U-M community has experienced an increase in home invasion activity across Washtenaw County. With the weather warming up and multiple events scheduled in Ann Arbor over the summer, it’s an even more important reminder to secure your residence, whether you are at home or away.

All students, faculty and staff — regardless of whether they living on or off campus — should take a proactive approach to securing their residence. Here are some safety tips from the U-M Division of Public Safety and Security:

  • Keep doors and windows locked
  • Don’t forget to secure sliding glass doors with a security bar
  • Turn on exterior lights at night
  • Close blinds or curtains

Most importantly, if something doesn’t feel right or seems out of place, trust your instincts and call 911 or DPSS at 734-763-1131.

DPSS also posts regularly on its Twitter account @umichdpss. You can also find additional safety tips on the DPSS website.
