Making a Difference: May 2018 highlights

June 12, 2018  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:

Peer recognition

Valerie Raupp, patient services associate, radiology

Valerie, you are amazing. The value that you provide to ultrasound through your extensive knowledge of protocols, guidelines and clinical indications is exquisite and unmatched. You are professional no matter who is on the other end of the phone line. Each day, you answer calls from the call center, clinics, physicians, patients and other staff members, never wavering in your demeanor or composure. You truly care about helping patients with their appointment scheduling and listen to their stories. Thank you for always going above and beyond. You are so very appreciated!

Connie Yoanides, MiChart ambulatory application coordinator, HITS

Connie provides excellent service every single day. She is the personification of a technology professional whom I can count on to educate and assist me with issues outside my realm of knowledge — or even those sometimes in my wheelhouse. And she always uses her acute attention to detail, responsiveness and great sense of humor. Thank you, Connie!

Anita Bowers, unit host, 9E/W, Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital

Anita is an invaluable resource on our unit. Whether she’s working with families after they deliver a baby or she’s helping take care of antepartum patients, you can tell that Anita cares deeply about everyone she comes into contact with. I don’t think people always realize how much our hosts do for us to make our jobs easier — without them things would not run half as smoothly around here. So I just wanted to say a big thank you to Anita! We love you!

Patient to staff

Mark DeMars, LPN, Medical Procedures Unit

I was a bit nervous when I came in for my procedure, but having Mark prep me made those nerves go away. He was not only competent, but also had a terrific sense of humor. Mark’s conversation had me laughing and forgetting I was having an IV started, monitor leads attached to my chest, and getting ready for an ultrasound. Mark, you were a great introduction to the MPU and a terrific nurse!

Christine Yen, interpreter, interpreter services

The language barrier is most worrisome to me when I come to the hospital. But because of Christine’s dedication to what she does, that concern was dispelled quickly. She did her work accurately, carefully and was very patient with me. In the end, she helped me solve all my problems. Thank you, Christine, for making my day go more smoothly.

Midwives, ob/gyn

The level of care and concern shown by all of the midwives during our induction and birth was incredible! All of the midwives on staff — including student midwives — listened intently, were extremely respectful and were all around fabulous with the care me and my newborn daughter received. Each midwife we saw throughout the 48-hour period was just top notch and deserves recognition for doing their job so well!

Melissa McWherter, ophthalmic technician

Melissa, thank you for the amazing service you recently provided to me. From the time you called my name to the time I exited, you had a smile on your face and a calming aura. You listened to my whole story without interruption and then tried your best to help me. Your department should be very proud to have such a dedicated, patient-focused employee. Thank you so much for making the Michigan Difference.

Family to staff

Margaret O’Neil, registered nurse, C&W 8 CAP

My daughter has recently had two hospital admissions and Maggie has been amazing with her. She is kind beyond words and is able to connect with her in a way that others were not. During the most stressful time in my life, I saw Maggie give my daughter a sense of hope and to once again want a future — and she now says she wants to be a nurse! I am grateful to Maggie and the gift she provides to our family each and every day.
