Heart transplant, VAD programs hold annual patient and family picnic

Nearly 100 individuals gathered on Saturday, Aug. 11 at the 23rd Annual Heart Transplant and VAD Patient and Family Picnic.

As always, there were many new faces and some familiar ones as well. Whole Foods provided some great sandwich fixings and guests brought a dish to pass, many of them homemade! Lots of shared experiences, laughter and even some challenging times made the day one to remember.

A special tribute was paid to caregivers — including spouses, adult children and friends — who have made commitments to patients.  A special lapel pin was created to honor these unsung heroes.

Each year, the transplant and VAD programs bestow an “Olympic style” medal to certain patients, with 10 being honored this year. Three of those present accounted for 1,134 hospital days in 2017-18.

Next year’s picnic is already scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 10, 2019. The transplant and VAD programs are looking forward to another successful outing!
